Susan Harwood Training Grant Program
This training is brought to you through the Susan Harwood Training Grant, which provides under-served, low-literacy, high-hazard workers and employers with free training on workplace safety and health hazards, responsibilities, and rights. NIU is proud to receive this grant and provide you with these classes.
As part of the grant program, NIU offers two or four hours on the following training topics for free.
All courses will cover the same material. The length of the class represents the depth of material it will cover, however topics are the same for 2-hour and 4-hour classes.
Training Topics
Lockout / Tagout
This 2-hour session focuses on the high-stakes reality of OSHA 1910.147, specifically for operators and maintenance teams. We go beyond the rules to look at the "Big Six" steps of a proper lockout, with a heavy focus on the most skipped -- and most lethal -- step: Verification (The “Try-Out”).
Machine Guarding
This 2-hour session cuts through the technical jargon of OSHA 1910.212 to focus on the life-altering reality of the factory floor. Designed for the people who operate and maintain machinery every day, this class uses data to spotlight the "Top 10" hazardous machines—including presses, saws, and conveyors.
Confined Space
This 2-hour session is built for the factory team—operators, maintenance, and attendants—who work in and around tanks, pits, and hoppers. We strip away the complex math to focus on the "Silent Killers": invisible, odorless gases that can drop a worker in seconds. Using OSHA data and tragic "Rescuer Trap" case studies, we'll show why 60% of fatalities are actually the people who went in to save a friend.
Fire Safety and Egress
This 2-hour session is built for the frontline worker who needs to know the fastest, safest way out when things go sideways. We look at OSHA 1910.36/37/157, but focus on the real-world scenarios: fire extinguishers, blocked exits, improper storage in egress paths, and the critical difference between an exit and an emergency exit. Using case studies where seconds mattered, participants will master the "Three D's" of clear egress—Defensible space, Direct path, and Door function.
Warehousing and Forklift
This 2-hour session introduces common hazards found in warehouse environments and explains key OSHA safety requirements. Participants will learn practical ways to prevent common workplace injuries, apply safe work practices during daily tasks, and respond appropriately to workplace emergencies. The training focuses on increasing hazard awareness and promoting a safer warehouse work environment.
